Dolores O’Riordan (1971–2018) was an iconic Irish musician, singer, and songwriter, best known as the lead vocalist of the internationally acclaimed rock band The Cranberries. Born on September 6, 1971, in Ballybricken, County Limerick, Dolores was the youngest of nine children. Despite facing challenges, including struggles with bullying and a complex family life, Dolores developed a passion for music that would define her career.
Her life changed dramatically at 18 when she heard about a local band looking for a new lead singer. The Cranberries, then an instrumental group led by guitarist Noel Hogan, gave Dolores a cassette tape with some tracks on the day of her audition. Within a week, she returned with lyrics and a melody for what would become their breakout hit, “Linger.” The song was deeply personal and showcased the haunting, emotional quality that would come to define her voice. Her audition marked the start of a creative partnership that would propel the band to global fame.
The Cranberries’ debut album, “Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?,” released in 1993, featured hits like “Linger” and “Dreams,” which captured hearts worldwide. Their follow-up albums, including “No Need to Argue,” brought even greater success, particularly with the politically charged anthem “Zombie,” inspired by the Warrington bombings during The Troubles in Northern Ireland.
Dolores’s music often reflected her personal experiences, including her struggles with fame, mental health, and a difficult marriage. Yet, she remained deeply connected to her Irish roots, often incorporating traditional elements into her music and even releasing a solo album, “Are You Listening?” in 2007. Known for her passion and candour, Dolores didn’t shy away from addressing controversial issues, and her raw honesty made her both a powerful performer and a relatable figure.
Tragically, Dolores passed away on January 15, 2018, at the age of 46, leaving behind an enduring legacy. Her voice remains a symbol of vulnerability, strength, and passion, with The Cranberries’ timeless songs continuing to inspire and comfort listeners worldwide.

Thank you for this, I didn't know that solo album existed. I love her & her story was incredibly powerful, yet I always felt that reserve of power was channelled by living in a burning house, so to speak.
